Ethiopian Rally update
Yesterday we walked past Meskel Square en route to Bambi's Supermarket and saw preparations for some event. While shopping we met a lady whose husband works at the Dutch Embassy. As well as advising us about local bread, she mentioned that there would be demonstrations today starting at 7am and that we should not go out. Very useful information.
This morning we woke to the sound of a huge crowd and were told here that between two and four million people were expected to be on the streets. The rally was in support of the new Prime Minister and his reforms for the better in Ethiopia. As with all these things there were bound to be protesters and you may have heard that a grenade attack occurred, injuring around 80 people, some of them seriously. Although we have been in several African countries when there was regime change, we hope that this time that will not happen!
Another major event occurred here today: Chris has succeeded in changing the old sticking starter motor for the brand new spare we brought out with us last year to Togo. He had just finished and put his tools away when the rain started, a bit earlier today, followed by a hailstorm. The temperature really drops and instead of feeling too warm at night as expected we are back to wearing our cold weather jim-jams!
