A change of direction
When we left Senga Bay on Monday morning we drove south towards Blantyre but followed the lake shore to visit Magotchi where Chris hoped to refill with gas. There appeared to be few recommended places to stop from then on. Pleased to have all 3 tanks full of gas in town, we retraced our route a few kilometres to stay at the Palm Beach Lodge where we camped on the sand in a quiet bay. A fortuitous stop. A ten minute conversation with the old Zimbabwean owner before leaving this morning changed our route to the Mozambique border entirely. On his advice about road conditions via Blantyre due to 'improvements’ we turned back to join the scenic mountain road to Dedza, a shorter route and quieter border. Tonight we are parked at 1550 metres at the Dedza Pottery and Lodge in cooler temperatures and a rocky peak above us, ready to cross into nearby Mozambique in the morning.
Another small adventure on the way: we decided we had plenty of time to stop to eat breakfast at Monkey Bay on the Lake and drove down a sandy track to the beach for the view. It was a little too soft and we spent the next couple of hours trying to reverse out! We attracted the attention of the local fishermen who came to help with digging, bringing water to wet the sand, pushing and generally giving advice. Chris let air out of the tyres and employed both our steel and plastic sand plates to get us free. In paying for the help we felt we had helped the local economy a little as they returned to their net mending and general languid state very happy men.
