Writing this on board recently started new ferry service from Motril to Tangier Med as we head along the Spanish coast towards Gibraltar. Now sailing due west into the sunset. Motril is only 1 hour's drive from #REDACTED# and is very cheap. Few people and only a handful of vehicles on board. We left Motril port at 4pm and arrive in Morocco at 11pm local time (same as GMT). We learned about this service from a lovely Irish lady we met in Toulouse, we will meet up with her in Cote d'Ivoire where she runs an NGO.
Before leaving at 2pm Charles sent us off with a delicious 'fry up' brunch.
Chris has gone to great expense (25 euros!) to book us a cabin for the crossing and we are both going to catch up on some sleep before we arrive. The good motorways in Morocco down as far as Agadir will be quiet if we decide to keep driving overnight until we are too tired. From then on, although we are very familiar with the route via Tan Tan to the Atlantic coast and down through Western Sahara to the Mauritanian border, the road surface is definitely not motorway condition. We plan to be in Nouakchott by the 29th to do some 'stuff' while staying at the Auberge Menata, then pick up Science Officer Spockward on th 31st to drive to the Senegal border, maybe in time for an evening flight in Mauritania, if conditions are right.
It's all very exciting now.
